The Great TAB Bake Off!

By The App Business under #TABLife 16 July 2014

Here at The App Business, as well as being tech lovers, we’re also a team of secret savvy bakers. With the next Mary Berry certainly somewhere amongst us, one of our Strategists, Antonia, thought it was high time we partook in our very own charity Great British TAB Bake Off! What could be better on a Friday than people enjoying cakes and raising money for a very worthy charity – Code Club.

What is Code Club?

Code Club is a nationwide network of free volunteer-led after-school coding clubs for children aged 9-11. Their mission is to give every child in the UK the chance to learn to code. It is their aim to have Code Club in 25% of primary schools in the UK by the end of 2015.

They create projects for their volunteers to teach at after school coding clubs or at non-school venues such as libraries. The projects they make teach children how to program by showing them how to make computer games, animations and websites. Their volunteers go to their local club for an hour a week and teach one project a week.

Code Club’s goal is to inspire children to build and share their ideas, learning along the way. They want children to leave Code Club inspired to pursue other digital making activities, whether that’s in their spare time, in school or as a career. They want them to gain skills that are useful to them – not only learning to program, but also learning about computational thinking, problem solving, planning, designing and collaboration. Needless to say, at The App Business, this goal is something we wholly support.

The Bake Off

To make Code Club proud and to do justice to the brilliant baking efforts of the TAB team, we had a rigorous judging process to determine The People’s Choice, and The Judges’ Choice (selected by our very lucky senior management team). The deserving winners won our two TAB Wooden Spoons of Baking Achievement.

After much poking, tasting, comments about soggy bottoms, and what makes a ‘real’ Victoria Sandwich, we found our winners:

The Judges’ Choice – Antonia

The People’s Choice – Will

I think I can now speak for everyone in saying we’re still full to the brim of sweet treats! With a healthy £133.16 raised for Code Club by some not-so-healthy-but-delicious cakes, Friday proved to be a roaring success.

Please be sure to check out Code Club and help as you can. We believe learning to code is a critical skill: it’s not just enough for children to know how to use technology. They should also know how it works, and how to build it, too.
